OKRIKA COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, AKURO TOBIN REACTS TO JETTY COLLAPSE CONTROVERSY

The Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area, AKURO TOBIN has cleared the controversy surrounding the number of persons who died in last Saturday’s jetty collapse at Isaka community in the LGA.

Some reports had earlier indicated that over 20 persons lost their lives in the incident on Saturday while returning from a burial ceremony.

But when contacted, the Chairman of the local government council, AKURO TOBIN told Brave Views described comments by some persons that many people lost their lives in the incident, as a cheap propaganda.

The Okrika insisted that only a girl of four years died in the incident, as local divers immediately rescued every other persons affected in the incident.

“When the incident occurred, I went straight to the jetty, I met the people there in the community. I was so happy with the people for what they did.

“Immediately, the local divers intervened and rescued all those, who fell into the waters, when the jetty collapsed. And everybody was rescued apart from a four year old little girl who couldn’t swim.

“The next day being Sunday, the corpse was discovered and handed over to the family.

“My brother, I speak to you today being October 6, that it is only one casualty not the number people are going about talking.

“It’s a propaganda, just rubbish the government of the day”.

Asked on how the jetty could be rebuilt, AKURO TOBIN explained that the jetty was already under construction, as awarded by the Rivers State Government.
